Although it certainly wasn’t the first company to disrupt the traditional travel accommodation offerings, there is no denying that Airbnb led the way for huge changes within the sector.

The trend of hyper-personalisation has led to a myriad of options for travellers, both in terms of lodging and location – fancy sleeping in another person’s house, a tent in the middle of a rainforest, or even a sleeping pod in a bus as it transfers you from A to B? No problem. It’s easier than ever to find what you want, no matter how weird or wonderful. And as for payment? Cash or card payments aren’t the only options anymore, and ventures are building entire business models around that very notion – see Worldpackers for a great example.

Even within the more traditional hotel market, disruption is afoot. The immense number of OTA’s are beginning to peak, and hotels are fighting back for control via the use of data analytics, prioritising customer experience and loyalty programs.
